Longest rivers in the world

Rivers are a very important source of water. Rivers are of very different sizes whether they are as short as a pond or as long as the sea.

Today we are going to present with you the longest rivers in the world.

List of  longest rivers in the world

1)Nile River

➡️The Nile is the longest river in the Africa continent and disputedly the longest river in the world as the Brazilian government claims that Amazon is the longest river.

➡️The Nile River has a length of  6,650 km (4,130 mi).

➡️It covers the area of approximately 3,254,555 sq.km.

➡️The Nile River has two major tributaries:-
1)White Nile
2)Blue Nile

➡️The countries in which the Nile River flows are Ethiopia, Eritrea, Sudan, Uganda, Tanzania, Kenya, Rwanda, Burundi,  Egypt, Democratic republic of congo, and South Sudan.

➡️The Nile River is the Life-line of Egyptians. Most of the population of ancient Egypt started residing near the Nile river.

➡️The Greek historian Herodotus wrote that "Egypt was the gift of the Nile".

➡️The origin of the Nile is seldom supposed to be Lake Victoria, but the lake has feeder rivers of ample size. The Kagera River, which runs into Lake Victoria near the Tanzanian town of Bukoba, is the longest feeder, although experts do not agree on which is the longest branch of the Kagera and hence the most distant source of the Nile itself.

2)Amazon River

➡️The Amazon River is located in South America and is the largest river in terms of volume outflow and the disputed longest river.

➡️At an average amazon river discharge of about 209,000 cubic meters per second.


➡️The Amazon River originated as a cross-country river in the Miocene epoch between 11.8 million and 11.3 million years ago and took its present shape approximately 2.4 million years ago in the Early Pleistocene.

➡️The length of the Amazon river is 6,575 km(4,086).

➡️It covers the total area of approximately 7,050,000 sq.km.

➡️The headwaters of the Apurímac River on Nevado Mismi had been considered for nearly a century as the Amazon's most distant source until a 2014 study found it to be the headwaters of the Mantaro River on the Cordillera Rumi Cruz in Peru.

➡️The countries through which the amazon river flows are Brazil, Peru, Bolivia, Columbia, Ecuador, Venezuela, Guyana.

3) Yangtze River

➡️The Yangtze is the third-longest river in the world and the largest river in Asia.

➡️The Yangtze River flows entirely in one country and that is China.

➡️It has a total length of 6300km (39178mi).

➡️It covers the total area of 1,800,000 sq.km.

➡️The Yangtze has played a major role in the history, culture, and economy of China. For thousands of years, the river has been used for water, irrigation, sanitation, transportation, industry, boundary-marking, and war.

➡️The prosperous Yangtze River Delta generates as much as 20% of China's GDP. 

➡️The Yangtze River is important to the cultural origins of southern China and Japan. Human activity has been verified in the Three Gorges area as far back as 27,000 years ago, and by the 5th millennium BC, the lower Yangtze was a major population center occupied by the Hemudu and Majiabang cultures, both among the earliest cultivators of rice.

4)Mississippi River

➡️The Mississippi is the second-longest river in the north American subcontinent and the 4th largest river in the world.

➡️It has a total length of 6275km(3902mi).

➡️The Mississippi River covers the total area of approximately 2,980,000sq.km.

➡️The word Mississippi itself comes from Misi zipi, the French rendering of the Anishinaabe (Ojibwe or Algonquin) name for the river, Misi-ziibi (Great River).

➡️The area of the Mississippi River basin was first established by hunting and accumulating Native American peoples and is deemed one of the few independent centers of plant domestication in human history.

➡️Proof of early cultivation of sunflower, a goosefoot, a marsh elder, and an indigenous squash dates to the 4th millennium BC.

➡️The lifestyle progressively became more convalescent after around 1000 BC during what is now called the Woodland period, with developing evidence of shelter making, pottery, weaving, and other applications.

➡️The Mississippi River flow through the United States and Canada.

5)Yenesei River

➡️The Yenesei River is the fifth-longest river in the world.

➡️It has a total length of 5,539km(3,445mi).

➡️The Yenesei River covers the total area of approximately 2,580,000sq.km.

➡️Wandering tribes such as the Ket people and the Yugh people have lived along the banks of the Yenisey since ancient times, and this area is the location of the Yeniseian language family.

➡️The Ket, counting about 1000, are the only descendants today of those who originally lived throughout central southern Siberia near the river banks. 

➡️The Yenesei River flows through two countries Russia and Mongolia.

6)Yellow River or Huang He

➡️The Yellow River or Huang He river is the second largest river in China after the Yangtze River.

➡️The Yellow River is the sixth-longest river in the world.

➡️It has a total length of 5464km(3395mi).

➡️The Yellow river covers the total area of 745,000sq.km.

➡️The Yellow rivers flow entirely in China.


➡️The Ob-Irtysh is the seventh longest river in the world.

➡️It has a total length of 5410km(3364mi).

➡️It covers the total area of approximately 2,990,000sq.km.

➡️A number of Mongol and Turkic peoples occupied the river banks for many centuries.

➡️In 657, the Tang Dynasty general Su Dingfang defeated Ashina Helu, qaghan of the Western Turkic Khaganate, at the Battle of Irtysh River, ending the Tang warfare against the Western Turks.

➡️The Ob-Irtysh River flows through Russia, Kazakhstan, China, Mongolia.

8)Rio de Plata river

➡️The Rio de Plata river is the eighth longest river in the world.

➡️It has a total length of 4880km(3030mi).

➡️The Rio de Plata river 2,582,672sq.km.

➡️The Rio de Plata river flows through Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, Bolivia, Uruguay.

➡️The Río de la Plata behaves as an estuary in which freshwater and seawater mix. The freshwater comes principally from the Paraná River as well as from the Uruguay River and other smaller streams.

➡️The main rivers of the La Plata basin are the Paraná River, the Paraguay River, and the Uruguay River.

9)Congo River

➡️The Congo River is the Ninth Longest river in the world.

➡️The Congo River is the second-longest river in the African continent after the Great Nile River.

➡️It has a total length of 4700km(2922mi).

➡️The Congo river covers the total area of approximately 3,680,000sq.km.

➡️The current course of the Congo River formed between 1.5 and 2 million years BP, during the Pleistocene.

➡️It is likely that during this period many upper tributaries of the Congo were apprehended from nearby river basins, including the Uele and upper Ubangi from the Chari system and the Chambeshi River[18] alongside a number of upper Kasai River branches from the Zambezi system.

➡️The Congo River flows through the Democratic Republic of Congo, Central African Republic, Angola, Republic of the Congo, Tanzania, Cameroon, Zambia, Burundi, Rwanda.

10)Amur River

➡️Amur is the tenth longest river in the world.

➡️The total length of the Amur river is approximately 4,444(2763mi).

➡️It covers the total area of approximately 1,855,000sq.km.

➡️The Amur is a crucial symbol of, and geopolitical factor in, Chinese–Russian relations. The Amur became remarkably conspicuous in the period of the Sino–Soviet political split of 1956-1966.

➡️The Amur River flows through Russia, China, Mongolia.
